Visiting remote destinations should be made more difficult not easier Essay
Visiting remote destinations should be made more difficult not easier - Essay Example Human impacts on remote destinations are often difficult to notice but quick to create a ripple effect in the Earthââ¬â¢s ecosystem. However, limited access does not mean that their destruction is okay. All efforts must be made to ensure that access to remote destinations is controlled so that our immediate environs are conserved (Bolger 27). The objective should be to protect that which is far so that the closest things to us can flourish and continue supporting us. This paper will argue that access to remote destinations should be restricted, not encouraged. Human impact on the environment goes beyond our immediate environs. Like the Earth, the environment is expansive and relative (Polunin 63). For example, mangroves and marshes are not uniformly distributed around the world, so protecting them may not be a priority for some. This might explain why inhabitants of the Himalayas strive to protect the ecosystem while others view its conservation with less concern (Richards 18). However, when considered as a whole, the environment is composed of numerous interconnect ecosystems which form a single entity. When snow peaks in the Himalayas melt the whole world is affected, though relatively. For example, the Himalayan bio-diversity region covers a large area with a unique climate of its own. It has 765 wild animals, 816 species of trees, and 1,745 species of medicinal flora with huge significance and value (Rayaz 16). The Marianas and the Mariana Trench, which have unique flora and fauna, are visited every year by explorers interested in the areaââ¬â¢s geological features (Huang and Shih 42). However, some of the methods used in exploration and descents are harmful to the ecosystem and may have long-term negative impacts. The Mariana Trench has been proposed as a nuclear waste disposal site (in a manner similar to other oceanic trenches), which is unsurprising given that humans like to take advantage of remote

Country Report - Essay Example Nonetheless the country is on the verge of transformation into a potentially successful economy. This report has been prepared for the CEO of the ââ¬ËRead the Worldââ¬â¢, a British origin company, that has appointed the consultancy firm for the purpose of evaluating the market for books in Vietnam and present the threats and opportunities that exist in the country. The report focuses on the social initiative of Read the World that functions with the aim of designing and producing educational books and magazines for the needy people in developing markets. Economic Environment of Vietnam Back in the year 1986, Vietnam started off liberalizing its economy. Once it opened its doors to encourage foreign direct investment in various sectors, a considerable jump has been noticed in the number of foreign organizations and western companies entering into the country. In the South East Asian region, Vietnam has emerged as a significant economic power. With the initiation of the renovatio n policy in the year 1986, the country has been able to fetch a sustainable high GDP growth rate during the past decade. With the GDP growth rate of 8.4 percent in the year 2005, the country has been able to the address the issue of poverty. ... Still, there are more possibilities to spread the advantages of the rapid growth in Vietnamââ¬â¢s economy across the globe. The activities in the private sector concentrated across 64 provinces of the nation. The leaders of these provinces have established a regulatory framework which would encourage calculated risk taking by the private entrepreneurs. In the response, with the countryââ¬â¢s continual decentralization process, the economic programs of the Asia Foundation have focused on the improvement of the business environment to enhance the private sector competitiveness as well as economic growth (The Asia Foundation, n.d., p. 1-2). Since early 1990s, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Asia Foundation together are responsible to promote global business development and economic integration across Vietnam, more specifically the growth among the small and medium enterprises (SMEs). In the year 2002, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Asia Foundation shifted their focal point to enhance the provincial governance, further encouraging the sector growth in the private sector. Started off in the year 2002, they initiated a program to find out the reason why some handful provinces have the ability to attract the private sector investment and to address the issue f economic success. This also reflects the eagerness of the respective authorities to make all the provinces equally attractive for the foreign investors. The economic outlook of Vietnam remains greatly positive supported by the governmentââ¬â¢s determination to comply with WTO. The country has experienced great progress with trade as well as investment reforms. Furthermore, its negotiation over the WTO entry has

Communication Theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Communication Theory - Essay Example The various functions of the communication theory will be discussed briefly which include the function of measuring the amount of information is transmitted, the amount of information being generated, the different types of sources, the interdependence of these sources and concepts such as noise, equivocation and causality of information. The chapter will provide a basic understanding of these concepts and will provide a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the theory in measuring communication taking place. The communication theory is a purely quantitative theory used to measure how much information is transmitted to be associated in a given state of affairs and which would then in turn provide a measure as to how much information will be available at various points. This theory discusses the amounts of information being transmitted, not the type of information, as the name provides a misleading direction. In respect to studying the amount of information generated this theory works in a sort of elimination technique removing all the possibilities which have been calculated to not exist. Eliminating all the choices which will not occur provides information as to the narrowing down of the decision. A binary decision, where the elimination of half the possibilities takes place till the required outcome is obtained, is also an elimination technique used to generate information related to selections (tossing of coins selecting the winner and eliminating the loser). Bits are the number of times a binary decision has to take place before getting to the required outcome. The general formula used to compute the amount of information generated is: I(s) = log n Here the I(s) is used to denote the amount of information generated by the association of the source. n is the number of equal possibilities that may or may not occur. This formula raises a point which must be distinguished that is that the amount of information (in bits) created by some state of affairs is different from the number of binary digits that will be used to represent the state of affairs. Both are different aspects. Using binary digits instead of distinguishable characteristics can cause in the creation of less efficient codes and would cause a more complex selection and elimination process. I(s) can also be referred to as the average amount of information generated by the source which is also called the entropy of the source at s. Similarly a source r can take place. This source causes an elimination of alternatives and can be interdependent with the source s. Thus I(s) and I(r) are also interdependent. But sometimes the possibilities of occurrences are not equable. These different possibilities s1, s2,,sn can be written in the form of p(si). This is often called the surprisal of the particular event. These formulas and probabilities prove that the communication theory deals with the sources rather than be concerned with the particular messages or the amount of information associated with the events occurrence. When calculating the average amount of information associated with a given source I(s) capable of providing different individual results then we take the surprisal values of all the specific individual possibilities of that source. Another thing

Microlending helps small enterepreneurs start businesses Essay
Microlending helps small enterepreneurs start businesses - Essay Example There are collaborative efforts between Kiva, lenders, entrepreneurs, and other players in the microfinance sector. This diversifies its reach to the global population, allowing web-based donations to be mobilized for loaning purposes. The organization of Kiva.org is unique relative to the financial purposes it serves. The microfinance combines a traditional business system with a contemporary web platform in executing its operations. The ultimate objective is to reach out to the needy entrepreneurial population and help it eradicate poverty in both the short run and long run. Kiva.org uses other microfinance players to reach out to the globe. Being a web-based microfinance, it does not necessarily need physical locations to attend to entrepreneurs. Also, working with other global microfinances further makes Kiva.org unique. Most importantly, the microfinance does not operate on a return-on-investment basis. Lenders actually donate the loan funds without expecting any returns on the loans that Kiva gives to needy entrepreneurs. The loans given by Kiva.org to entrepreneurs come from donations that are received from the lenders through the website. This essentially deviates from traditional businesses where loan funds are obtained from deposit-taking activities. On the same note, Kiva.org depends on field partners to have entrepreneursââ¬â¢ profiles approved in order to qualify them for microfinance lending. The model Kiva.org uses to give loans is effective and efficient. As the situation stands, this microfinance has reached millions of entrepreneurs in need of loans. Follow-ups are also made to not only ensure that the awarded loans are put to use, but also repayments are collected when they fall due. While this model appears simple, it is actually sophisticated and functional. Personally, I think that this model would work on a larger scale. The

How do we explain the development of intrastate or civil conflict Essay
How do we explain the development of intrastate or civil conflict - Essay Example Internal conflicts contribute to disruption of the existing infrastructure and depreciate economic development, which is highlighted in poor African countries with long recovery periods that adversely affect peopleââ¬â¢s economic, health and social wellbeing (Collier, 1998). The politics of a country may make unequal distribution of a countryââ¬â¢s resources and wealth, and this ultimately leads to violent rebellions against the rich and those in power. Armed civil conflicts are mostly common in the economically underdeveloped nations with high prevalence of joblessness, oppression, and injustice. The After Effects of European Colonialism The Berlin conference laid up the strategies for dividing Africa necessitating the creation of haphazard artificial boundaries. The large expanse of the African continent became a challenge for colonial administrators who lacked the manpower and resources to effectively rule the land (Shah, 2010). They used the divide and rule policy, which fe rmented numerous and disastrous conflicts. The boundaries colonialists created in Africa served their own economic interests. Colonialism erased entire cultures, and they way of life of many communities, most colonies were given minimal education, and religion to suit the Europeans needs (Shah, 2010). The postcolonial period proved difficult for Africans as the majority had useless skills unequipped for rebuilding their continent, coupled with people of diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultures crammed up together in depraved conditions. These people lacked the capacity to accommodate each other and develop nationalism that is exhibited in other parts of the world (Shah, 2010). Majority of the leaders that assisted Europeans to govern were ambitious and corrupt and they ruthlessly exploited their fellow Africans for their own gain. After independence, these people ascended to powerful political positions and to safeguard their positions majority used single party leaderships to rule. Single party leadership oppressed many citizens creating civil wars that led to assassinations and coups. These regimes are responsible for a majority of the civil wars experienced in Africa (Shah, 2010). Colonialists who introduced new cash crops directed the national economic activities of most developing countries. The Africans lost their native crops, which were suited to their climates and embraced foreign cash crops to serve the western markets exposing them to food insecurities (Shah, 2010). The nationalization of commercial cash crop farming and mineral mining in some regions make these people dependent on limited economic activities exposing them to fluctuating world market, prices increasing civil war risks. Africa constitutes very many ethnic communities and sub tribes that previously coexisted peacefully. The scramble for Africa by Europeans divided the continent and changed the structural life of Africans. Most colonialist governments promoted Darwinism, which elevated some communities and oppressed others leading to fundamental inequalities that have persisted to the current times. The Rwandese genocide arose from the tribal hierarchy left by the Belgium after Rwanda gained independence. They had made Tutsis

Artificial nutrition and hydration and end of life decision making Term Paper
Artificial nutrition and hydration and end of life decision making - Term Paper Example The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) emphasized that ANH was originally described as a means to effectively ââ¬Å"provide short-term support for patients who were acutely ill and are often used to provide a bridge to recovery, or to meet therapeutic goals of prolonging lifeâ⬠(Hospice and Palliative Nurse Association (HPNA), 2011, p. 1). The current discourse hereby aims to present crucial ethical concerns or dilemma pertaining to AHN, especially during end of life (EOL) situations using support from evidence based sources. Ethical Concerns In an article written by Brody, et al. (2011), the authors explored controversial issues ranging from allegedly prolonging or sustaining unconscious human life, particularly that which was apparently categorized as patients in permanent vegetative state (PVS); also in terms of determining conformity to patientsââ¬â¢ or relativesââ¬â¢ wishes in contrast to health care practitionersââ¬â¢ professional guidelines (Sampso n, Candy, & Jones, 2009). Other ethical issues ensue from the religious beliefs and practices, specifically that which were defined under the early doctrines of the Roman Catholic church, to wit: ââ¬Å"to value above all the ability of medical technology to extend life indefinitely was interpreted by the Church as idolatryâ⬠(Drane, 2006; cited in Brody, et al.: The 1950s, 2011, par. 2). This original belief apparently seemed to stem from the perspective that life and death is governed by the Supreme Being or God and that any intervention not considered within the natural course of life was therefore considered not within the Will of God. This belief was apparently changed in recent Catholic teachings which reportedly supported that ââ¬Å"the position currently endorsed by the Church hierarchy stresses life prolongation based on fundamental human dignity. The two most recent Popes have each stated that administration of food and water, artificially or not, constitutes ordinar y care ââ¬Å"in principle;â⬠ANH is to be considered not a medical technology, but rather a ââ¬Å"natural means of preserving life.â⬠Removing ANH is ââ¬Å"euthanasia by omissionâ⬠because the cause of death would be lack of sustenance rather than the underlying diseaseâ⬠(Brody, et al.:Recent Roman Catholic Teaching, 2011, par. 1). The new teachings support the belief that life should be preseved by all means, as a consistent paradigm towards provision of all methods and possible resources available and accessible to the family members and to the medical practitioners governing the patientsââ¬â¢ lives. Concurrently, as expounded by Brody, et al. (2011), a transition in bioethics that acknowledged patients rights to refuse life extending medical care, consistent with patientsââ¬â¢ rights and the obligation to allegedly respect patient autonomy has elevated application of ANH to face the following ethical concerns: ââ¬Å"Bioethicists who supported mandat ory ANH offered several arguments: terminating food or fluids made the physician causally responsible for death; the burdens of ANH seemed minor compared to the overriding good of life prolongation; food and fluids represented ââ¬Å"careâ⬠at a basic, symbolic level; and in an environment dominated by cost containment, forgoing ANH might lead to the selective elimination of vulnerable patientsââ¬

Philosophical discussion with a film Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Philosophical discussion with a film - Essay Example The creation of an ideal superman and the philosophy of fighting for the good fo all and even killing for the same despite all personal feelings comprise the final theme of the movie. The ending might be controversial in some respects but the paper will defend his actions apart from relating my personal feelings regarding the same. The superman shows us a controversial philosophy of dealing with injustice with a bold face and taking the toughest decision of killing for good. The very concept behind the creation of a superman lies in something greater than human. But greater than human in what way is the main concern, i.e. should a superman be born with a bigger and wiser outlook towards life? Do we want to see him as more physically powerful than normal human beings or more psychological strong or be extremely benevolent and kind hearted which we are not capable of. We see a superman in our eyes and in our ways. My idea of a superman is someone who is extremely powerful and can easil y kill but will not kill and show his power unnecessarily. The provocation to show his power should be extremely strong in order to actually pour out his strength and go for a killing. Here the superman fits this criteria perfectly well and kills for a reason bigger than personal benefit. So here the superman is kind hearted and shows personal feelings for the loss like other human beings but he knows what is good for the world and does exactly that without being concerned about his personal gains. It is important to give ample chance to the victim for rectifying his mistakes and the superhero did the same too unlike he ormal state laws where a criminal is arrested and might be shot down without giving a fair chance for correction. So he is above the conventions and reason of human law. At this point I believe the Man of Steel satisfies the audience psychologically in being the super hero. A true hero whom people can idolize and worship and most importantly learn from under similar circumstances. This summer we got the pleasure to satisfy our fantasy instinct through the hero of the superheroes none other than Superman. Though the title Man of Steel nowhere reflects any indications of Superman in it, but the title itself re-boots the idea of the mystery and re-imagination of the background within it. This movie is the idea of a new version of the ever imaginative Superman story. Director Zack Synder tried to unfold his imagination which audience wants to see in their real life. Now there are several questions which has been arrived. Critics have various points to rate a film. This gets a first critical view in the aspect that it shows superman in a totally different aspect. The major critic that took place is that superman here is very serious, conservative, always frustrated, chiseled and handsome but not interested in any kind of romantic affairs. He is always trying to defend the planet earth from the evil eyes of Krypton another imaginary planet from where actually superman belongs to. But as he became the son of the earth and got attached with the upbringing atmosphere he now took this as a duty to protect earth from any bad force. Many critics have complained about the movie that the movie has too much action which was not actually required. But according to my point of view I will say that though it was full of action but the use of the plot was good and effective. This is because I think the director wanted to
